The Foxy Merkins
Directed by Madeleine Olnek
Two lesbian hookers wind their way through a world of bargain-hunting housewives and double-dealing conservative women in this buddy comedy, an homage to and riff on iconic male hustler films. Margaret is a down-on-her-luck hooker in training, who meets up with Jo, a beautiful and self-assured grifter from a wealthy family and an expert on servicing women, even as she considers herself proudly heterosexual. The film follows their adventures together on the street, through encounters with husky-voiced seductresses, mumbling erotic accessory salesmen and shopaholic swingers. Navigating the bizarre fetishes and sexual needs of their 'dates' brings into focus the hilarious and pathetic disparity between the two hookers, fellow travelers who will share the road together but only for a while.

God damn, this movie is funny. There aren't a lot of films with lesbian protagonists-- and even few with fat butch protagonists-- and there's some interesting moments that serve as a meta-commentary on that lack. (I wrote an article talking more about that aspect of THE FOXY MERKINS for BitchFlicks.) Largely a parody of MIDNIGHT COWBOY and MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, there are some dramatic moments that don't quite hold up, but can't be separated from the source material. It's a reasonable price to pay for a really fun date.

One of the funniest movies I've seen in years. It's like Midnight Cowboy mixed with Louie, but way funnier than Louie ever has been. Incredible film. A-

i have no idea what happened 80% of the movie but in the end the happy lesbians walked to the sunshine together while hand holding and my 4 stars go to that scene alone

A quick-paced, light-hearted, respectful, silly indie comedy about lesbian prostitutes that aren't very good at their job and the weird older women that they attract. Absolutely NO sexy scenes, this is the complete opposite of smut despite the movie's synopsis. Not predictable or boring, fairly original jokes.
