Shrew's Nest

Spain, 1950s. Montse's agoraphobia keeps her locked in a sinister apartment in Madrid and her only link to reality is the little sister she lost her youth raising. But one day, a reckless young neighbor, Carlos, falls down the stairwell and drags himself to their door. Someone has entered the shrew's nest... perhaps he'll never leave.

    Dead by Dawn 2015

Slow burning but hugely entertaining horror movie/psychological family drama about two sisters who live together after there parents have passed away. The older sister Montse, played by the fantastic Macarena Gomez is an agoraphobic recluse who never leaves the flat while the younger sister (Nadia de Santiago) leads a fairly normal life. the relationship between the sisters is a tense one with Montse taking on the role of authority that tends to suffocate the younger sister and when she turns 18 this leads to resentment between them. Things take a turn for the worse when a handsome neighbour enters there life, further testing the siblings relationship.

This Spanish movie is almost a two hander, the first half is a tense family drama as it establishes the relationship between the sisters while the second half of the movie turns into an all out horror with some nasty violence and a large dose of black humour. Overall this is a top film and easy to recommend.

Musarañas is a spanish Horror flick presented by Alex de La Iglesia, about a psychotic woman and her sister. The movie almost entirely set inside a single apartment and has in the acting its strongest point. Each act of Shrew's Nest reminded me a lot of other movies though; the first act is very similar to Polanki's apartment trilogy, with the religious fanatic sister and her repressed sexuality transforming her own life and her sister's into a living hell. Then, with the introduction of Carlos, the movie goes completely "Misery" style. The third and final act is pretty much like French gore filled "Inside". There's a constant feel of "I've seen that before" in this movie, but the acting is good enough to make it thoroughly enjoyable.
